History of Candles
Ear candles have been used by many cultures as an effective natural therapy since ancient times.  Historical roots can be found among the people of the siberian prairies.  Asia and the native North and South American Indians.

Ancient rock painting show the use of ear candles at initiation rituals and medicinal ceremonies.

The Hopi, the oldest Pueblo people with great medicinal knowledge and a high degree of spirituality, brought this knowledge to Europe with the professional involvement of BIOSUN.  Since 1985 BIOSUN has been researching the use of ear candles and re-establishing their popularity.

What are they made of?

Original BIOSUN ear candles are still made by hand today using the traditional recipe and the finest regularly tested ingredients.  Only premium quality, pesticide free untreated cotton is used.

The ear candles are comprised of:

  • Pure beeswax

  • St John's Wort

How the candles work

BIOSUN ear candles are hollow and cylindrical in shape and about 22cm long they have a

burning time of 10-12 minutes.  Ear candles need to be lit to function and continue to burn throughout the treatment.

The candles are placed within the ear creating a mild anchorage within the outer ear. They are then lit at the end farthest from the red line and very quickly the ingredients with which the candle is impregnated within the cotton begin to vaporise and are drawn down the hollow centre of the candle into the first chamber of the ear by the priniciple of the convectional air current flow.

The candles create a mild suction as the vapours inside the ear gently massage the eardrum.  This action helps to regulate the pressure systems within the head including the sinuses.

This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses.  It is soothing and helpful for earache and headache, ear noise, stress and nervousness.  These benefits have been well documented and confirmed by thousands of doctor's worldwide.

Because of the seal created between the candle and the ear the vapours are drawn up the hollow centre of the candle and with it containing impurities such as wax and foreign bodies.  These are either removed by being burnt off, which is seen by the appearance of smoke from the top of the candle or are collected in the candle filter.  Most of the waxy secretion is removed immediately but occasionally it can be removed for up to 48 hours after a session.

What will happen during my treatment?

You will be asked to lie flat on a couch onto one side, there is no need for removal of any clothing.  I will firstly look into each ear with the use of an otoscope so see if there is any inflamation or perforation of the eardrum and also to see if there is any compacted earwax.  The candles will be placed in one ear at a time and once lit will burn for approximately 8-10 minutes depending on how hard the candle needs to work.  Once both ears have been treated with the candles you will be asked to lie flat on your back whilst a deeply relaxing facial massage is carried out.  At the end of the treatment the candles will be opened up so that the residue can be examined and we can determine if further treatment is necessary.
